Amazon.com An Excerpt from Bill Watterson's Introduction: "I've loved comic strips as long as I can remember. As a kid, I knew I wanted to be either a cartoonist or an astronaut. The latter was never much of a possibility, as I don't even like riding in elevators. I kept my options open until seventh grade, but when I stopped understanding math and science, my choice was made. There is great personal satisfaction in attending to detail and quality, and I remain very proud of the standards the strip met day after day. I also liked the responsibility of knowing that, succeed or fail, it was all my own doing. This approach kept the strip very honest and personal--everything having to do with Calvin and Hobbes expressed my own ideas, my own values, my own way. I wrote every word, drew every line, and painted every color. It's a rare gift to find such fulfilling work and I tried to show my appreciation by giving the strip everything I had to offer." As always, Amazon packaging disappoints September 6, 2008 I received this and a corner of the slipcase was badly damaged. So much so that the books weren't going to be slipping in and out. As one reviewer said, the books aren't held together well, but with care and the SLIPCASE, they may be ok.
So, I ordered a replacement, sending the original order well-taped at my expense and having to go to UPS, gas at my expense. The replacement ALSO came with NO bubble wrap and in a box that also couldn't handle the weight and barely taped at that. Thus the book was falling out of it, and the box was severely torn up. This time, the fabric on the slipcase was ripped up badly (yeah, that would make a nice gift.)
So I called and asked that they bubble wrap the replacement. Now they are refusing to replace it, because they aren't confident that they know how to adequately pack the book. WHAT? They expect me to pay for a heavy duty box to send it back. They expect me to drive around, using my gas to find one. They expect me to use of more of my packaging tape to adequately (read the return instructions) tape it up. They expect me to drive back to UPS (it shipped USPS) to ship it off. Yep, this is fair. All because Amazon doesn't know what bubble wrap and tape is.
Just...well, brilliant! September 5, 2008 I have loved Calvin & Hobbes since I first stumbled across them c1990s. I have 3 sons (10-18) who have, quite literally, read to pieces the five collection books I own. So, when I found out about this series, I knew I would need at least one copy (for me). Having purchased a set and examined it "in the flesh", I had no hesitation in ordering another two sets, one for each (and hoping I can read them as well). I may need to buy a 4th for me - the only reason I have not (yet)is concern about Customs saying I'm running an import business... Shipping to Australia has resulted in a very minor dint to one corner of the box-set, courtesy of minimal airbags in the carton, but the books themselves are in fine shape. Quality is excellent, and my biggest issue now is deciding at what age to pass them to my boys, so that they can appreciate them for many years to come. Such is the physical condition. The content is quite simply the best cartoon series I have ever seen, and having had children adds a new dimension of appreciation of the insights Bill Watterson crafted into the strips. Mr Watterson - thank you!
The Complete Calvin and Hobbes August 25, 2008 This is a really good set of Calvin and Hobbes cartoons. The bound form makes it more durable. Definitely a buy to keep.
Excellent August 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is excellent, 3 big books gathering all Bill Waterson's work on Calvin & Hobbes. It weighs 10kg and has a rigid binding and box.
Lots of colored sheets and some review on the Bill Waterson's work.
Piece of Art August 7, 2008 If you're the comics-strips fan, who has been always desperate about the fact, that you could never gather everything about your favourite comics in one collection, your days of despair are over. This book is every comics fan dream. Amazingly complex, ...and amazingly heavy, on great paper, each sunday strip with its well deserved own page, with background introduction. This will bring a satisfied smile on your face every time you catch a glance of this book on your shelf (providing it's sturdy enough to hold it). A tribute to Calvin and Hobbes. Marvellous.
