2 out of 5 stars Historically interesting...   July 3, 2008

The evolution of the Martian Manhunter is rather interesting to watch unfold. He starts out much different than you might be used to. The first half of these stories are basically private eye/detective type stories. Martian Manhunter operates invisibly without the general populace even knowing he exists. I find MM's vulnerability to fire to be annoying at best. Fire affects him the same way kryptonite affects Superman. Anytime someone lights a cigarrette in his presence he passes out. I wish they had just gone with the idea that he wasn't invulnerable to fire instead of it actually weakening him. MM would have benefited from a supporting cast (there isn't much of one) and some colorful villains to battle (none of those either).

3 out of 5 stars Only for die hard MM fans   March 7, 2008

This is a collection for people who have a jones (no pun intended) for some campy, nostalgic, good-old MM action. I am one of those people. Definitely worth the money if you really like classic comics for their style of story telling. The first several issues are enjoyable simply because they are so ridiculous, but as the volume progresses, the art gets better, and the storytelling is more enjoyable in and of itself. Unfortunately it cuts off before the seventies start. That's okay, I would like to see more emphasis on new Manhunter Story TPB anyway.

5 out of 5 stars The definition of Heroic   September 15, 2007

Simply put, any of the Silver Age volumes in DC Comics Showcase and Marvel's Essentials are better crafted, and more fun than the current kill 'em all and let god sort 'em out software those companies now publish.

Buy Green Lantern. Buy Adam Strange. Buy Batman. Buy the Elongated Man. Buy Antman. Buy The Fantastic Four. Buy Ironman. Buy Daredevil. Heck. Buy Haunted Tank and Man-thing! It really will make you question comics current direction.
